Chamber Music in Adelsteen Normann's Landscape
The music in tonight’s program demonstrates how three composers, in different ways, have challenged and expanded the expressive possibilities of the string quartet throughout music history.
The first 22 bars of Mozart’s “Dissonance Quartet” gave this work its nickname. When the piece was written in 1785, the dissonances were so shocking that the publisher returned the score to Mozart, believing it was full of printing errors. With his imagination and innovation, Mozart revolutionized string quartet music for all time.
Piazzolla’s Four Seasons are presented in a different order than Vivaldi’s more famous Four Seasons, reflecting the contrast between the northern and southern hemispheres — Italy and Argentina. Piazzolla created an entirely new style of tango by combining traditional tango with classical music and jazz. This was controversial at first, as he challenged the saying: “In Argentina, everything can change — except the tango.” Despite this, he is now regarded as a national icon and was named an honorary citizen of Buenos Aires in 1985.
Smetana’s string quartet “From My Life” was also a pioneering work of its time. Deaf and living in poverty on a modest pension, he composed the quartet by breaking with conventional composition rules and forms. Instead, he created something entirely new — a deeply personal “life in review.” The work moves from his joyful youth filled with dancing and celebration, through his first love and Czech national music, to his personal tragedy marked by tinnitus, hearing loss, and ultimately, deafness.
