Svalbard
Nordover Art Centre opened in 2022 and is a unique building in Longyearbyen, home to the world’s northernmost arts centre and cinema. Located at 78 degrees north, we serve as a cultural hub in a community characterised by a highly transient population.
The architecture and interior design are inspired by Svalbard’s dramatic light conditions and the raw, industrial character of the surrounding landscape. The colour palette and design language reflect both the darkness of the polar night and the fragile, clear light of the snow-covered environment.
The building houses exhibition spaces, a shop, café, cinema, workshops, and dedicated areas for young people. The exhibition rooms were developed in collaboration with Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum and are built to international museum standards, designed to be easily adapted for future exhibitions and changing needs.
Nordover Art Centre aims to promote knowledge and understanding of art created with diverse perspectives from the polar regions, as well as the historical context surrounding Svalbard.
Tickets for exhibitions and events can be purchased directly from Nordover Art Centre.
