Adelsteen Normann (1848-1918) is considered as one of the greatest Northern Norwegian artists. Normann grew up on Bodøya outside Bodø, and was educated at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. Spending the majority of his career in Germany, Normann became internationally renowned for his magnificent landscapes, often depicting the scenery of Northern Norway. Amongst his admirers was the German Emperor Wilhelm II, who also became the artist's close friend.

Since the Museum's foundation in 1985, The Art Museum of Northern Norway has established a considerable collection of Normann's work. A selection of Normann's paintings is now on display in the permanent collection.
